New Moon: my thoughts.

One of the highlights of the weekend was going to see New Moon, as mentioned in my previous post. Due to school timetable conflicts, the outing I had planned with friends was cancelled. However, my boyfriend was totally wonderful and came to see it with me instead.
It was really busy at the cinema – with as many guys as girls, which I hadn’t expected. I thought perhaps a few dutiful boyfriends, and some pre-pubescent bookworms (after all, the books are aimed ‘young adults’, which seems to be around 11-14 years these days) but no, the boys were out in force!
The film was… toward the lower side of average. I’m not going to go into great detail, so as not to spoil it for anyone, and also because it’s not really worth discussing at length. It centers more around Jacob’s character, but in quite a predicable way. There are a couple of very clichéd scenes of gratuitous physicality… I’m not exactly complaining, but the ripple of laughter that echoed around the theatre was not something I was expecting! The later scenes with the vampire Volturi were by far the most interesting, with new characters introduced, thankfully – there’s only so much mooning over lost/unrequited love I can take in one movie. I was a little disappointed at the changes in cinematic details between this film and Twilight, such as the appearance of the vampires. They are supposed to look slightly unreal, but be able to blend in with effort. I thought this was achieved well in Twilight, but totally overplayed in New Moon… their skin was lightened, eyes digitally enhanced to a super freaky extent (I think they used contact lenses in the first one) and lips changed to a disturbing dark red. They looked very very odd, and far less convincing in my view. Despite that, it was a nice evening with the boy – worth every penny just for that… and it wasn’t so bad it will put me off seeing the next one
That’s all I really have to say on the matter, but I’d be interested to hear anyone else’s thoughts – think it belongs on the cutting room floor or the Oscar’s hall of fame?
A little while later…
November 20, 2009 at 8:28 am | Posted in Uncategorized | 1 CommentOK, as you can see, I’ve been more than a little slack with my updating recently. Things have just been so busy! I haven’t even had time to call my Mummy on the phone for nearly 2 weeks, and we usually don’t go 2 days without speaking.
The photos in the last post were intended as the start of my mission to photograph everything I ate in a bid to encourage myself to think more about what I’m putting in my mouth. It is indeed a mission – taking a photo of every little thing makes me realise how much I eat, and how much of that is actually junk food. I have slight perfectionist tendencies unfortunately and if I can’t do something properly, I don’t want to do it at all… so I think the photo project is on hold for now, because I don’t want it to discourage me from posting. I can see it making a reappearence in the future though!
I’m running a bit late for class now, but later today I will be seeing New Moon, which is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. I think maybe because I can relate to the Edward-Bella-Jacob love triangle slightly, being in a similar position in the past, where I had feelings for ‘Edward’ but I was lost without ‘Jacob’ in my life.
Moving on, my 2 other housemates’ names both begin with J, so they’re hard to differentiate just using initials or their real names so in keeping with today’s Twilight theme, the guy will henceforth be known as ‘Jacob’! My girl housemate will be ‘Edith’, because it sounds similar…! Simples
The other exciting thing I have planned for today, which I’ve been meaning to do for ages: get baking! I have a really tasty recipe for chocolate dipped florentines (those little fruit/nut brittle discs) as they totally remind me of Christmas and I’m ready to get into the spirit. I certainly will be documenting that in photos and posting under my ‘creativity’ tag.
Anyone else looking forward to New Moon? I’ll come back with my review later!
A chilly November day

Not quite as I planned... but better than nothing...
This morning I was pleasantly woken by the boy climbing into bed with me just before my alarm went off. Unfortunately the snuggling blew my resolve to get up early for yoga… instead I was too late even for breakfast! I grabbed some things to take with me and cycled the ten minute journey to get to class in perfect time, phew! So, breakfast: banana, chocolate & nut cereal bar, a packet of Hoola Hoops and apple & pomegranate water.
After the lectures I went with my housemate to buy a new laundry rack as it rains too much now to dry things outside.

Mmmm, Christmas Starbucks!
We happened across a Starbucks and I indulged myself – I’ve been waiting so long for the Gingerbread Latte to come back on the menu! I couldn’t resist the gingerbread man biscuit or the wee little chocolates, but I’ve been good & only eaten the nutty chocolate (left). The gingerbread is safely stashed in the cupboard downstairs.. for now!
I bought a coffee for a homeless guy as well – I like to think someone would do the same if it were me freezing on the streets. Got myself a new alarm clock as my mobile phone alarm is too fiddly to set every night. It even projects an image of the time onto the wall/ceiling… geeky and cool.

Wonderful graze box of yumminess!
Got home to discover my graze box had arrived, full of lovely goodies. For those that don’t know, they are boxes of healthy snacks delivered in the mail all ready to nibble on rather than reaching for the doughnuts. Anyone in the UK who wants to TRY ONE FOR FREE: click here! There’s no catch, I promise! You enter your card details to verify you’re a new customer but there’s no charge for the free box and you can cancel before they send any more. Brilliant!!
The boy was also very excited when I arrived, and I discovered it was because his Christmas gift to me had arrived! We’d agreed to exchange gifts early because we’d guessed our gifts — he gave me the most amazing pair of Skullcandy headphones. No doubt these will get a post of their own in the near future!
I tucked in to the ‘sweet as a nut’ punnet from my box and left for a meeting at university. The meeting was tedious but necessary, just an informal chat about how I’m getting on so far this year.

Chicken tikka wrap: food for a rainy day.
Then tennis, which I was very much looking forward to… only to find it was cancelled because, oh yay, it was pouring with rain!
I trudged to the courts, just in case anyone had decided to brave the rain. They hadn’t.
So I trudged to where the boy was doing an assignment, stopping to pick up some sustanance (‘healthy choice’ chicken tikka wrap for me, hot cornish pasty for him).
Did a couple of hours work in the computer lab, grazing on the ‘swallows & amazons’ dried fruit & nut punnet, and then we headed home, via my campus to pick up my rather wet bike. Since then I’ve been indulging my Farmville addiction and enjoying a bit of silly banter with my lovely housemates.

A cheat dinner, but with 2 of my 5-a-day on the side
Just cooked (well, heated in the oven) & ate my dinner of beef hotpot and mixed vegetables. It was chilled pre-prepared… apparently “serves one” but I’m thinking a bit generous?! It tasted a lot better than it looks, but woah, SO full!
So that was my day… how was yours? I really encourage you to sign up for one of the graze boxes – if you missed the link to your FREE one, click here. Back to studying now, but keep your eyes peeled as I have some exciting posts planned for tomorrow!
Hello world!
November 10, 2009 at 5:15 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a commentMy name is Felix, and I am more than the sum of parts.
My rationale:
I created this blog because I wanted somewhere to explore who I am. I am a medical student. I study medicine – it’s what I do and how I spend my time; it’s who my friends are and it’s what we talk about; it’s a life-long commitment. It is my main identity, and I’ve realised that over the last 18 months I have lost a lot of the aspects of myself that I used to think essential.
My foundations:
I want to build on who I am now, expand myself. Grow beyond this niche. It’s a place I’ve worked hard to get to, yes, but I don’t want it to shape me entirely. I don’t know where to start; the world is so full of possibilities for me. I do have a few interests that have stuck by me – snowboarding, graphic design, cooking, reading, singing – but even they are a little rusty. There are other things that have made more sporadic appearences in my life such as yoga, environmentalism and playing the guitar.
My goals:
- I know that I want this blog to encourage and showcase my creativity, so I will post any creative projects on here.
- I am going to improve my health by eating more mindfully and doing more exercise.
- I want to become more spiritually aware through yoga & meditation.
- I am an introvert and tend to neglect my social relationships sometimes – I will work on that and form more meaningful bonds with people.
- I wish to really chase the things that make me feel good – snowboarding and singing especially – and find more persuits that fulfil me.
- I will aim to become more productive, more positive, more adaptable and more in tune with myself.
- I am going to explore and celebrate my likes and dislikes, my personal style and my talents.
- Although it will not be a major feature of this blog, I am also going to be more judicious with spending money as this has always been a struggle for me.
Welcome to the start of my revolution! You’re excited, right? Right! I hope for this to be the sort of journey that inspires those who read it: bursting with positivity, interesting, helpful, interactive and uplifting. Yes, it’s all about me… but it’s also ALL ABOUT YOU!
